How Do I Get LEED Accreditation (LEED AP)?

The LEED certification procedure consists of three steps:

According to the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook, a professional must earn a LEED Green Associate certification to be eligible to take the LEED AP with Specialty test.It is highly advised that you have previous experience working on a LEED-certified project before taking the LEED AP with Specialty exam. The registration method for the LEED AP with Specialty exam is the same as for the LEED Green Associate Exam. Exams are now $250 for USGBC members, $350 for nonmembers, and free for veterans.

If you’ve already worked on LEED projects, you may choose to pursue the LEED AP with Specialty certification.

LEED rating systems or specialties include the following:

  • Building Design + Building (BD+C): This specialty is open to those who specialize in the design and construction of structures in the commercial, residential, educational, and healthcare sectors.
  • LEED AP Operations + Maintenance (LEED AP O+M): This specialty is for building operations and maintenance professionals; it applies to all existing buildings.
  • LEED AP Interior Design + Building (LEED AP ID+C): This certification is awarded to those who specialize in the design, building, and enhancement of commercial interiors and tenant spaces.
  • LEED AP Neighborhood Development (LEED AP ND): This specialty is intended for those who work in neighborhood and community planning, design, and development.
  • LEED AP Homes: This specialty is for people who design and build residential constructions.

According to the USGBC, “all LEED professional’s area unit needed to take care of and renew their certificate each 2 years by earning and submitting continuing-education hours inside their biennial cycle or news amount.”

A LEED Green Associate must earn and report 15 continuing-education (CE) hours during each two-year reporting period, including at least 12 General CE hours and 3 Rating System–specific CE hours. Every two-year reporting period, LEED APs with Expertise must acquire and submit 30 CE hours, comprising at least 24 General CE hours and 6 Rating System–specific CE hours relevant to his or her expertise.
