Overview

Physical security professionals must get specific qualifications that demonstrate to employers that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to accomplish the job requirements. The Physical Security Professional- PSP certification online training course is sponsored by the American Society for Industrial Security, one of the main physical-security industry groups. It is a distinction that security professionals may use to distinguish themselves from other experts.

A physical security professional-PSP assesses security risks in homes, companies, and other public locations, and then implements security solutions to guard against such threats. The physical security specialist protects people, data, and material objects by utilizing physical obstacles such as fences and barricades, as well as technology such as computers and video monitors.

Individuals, who undertake threat assessments and develop, run, build, or maintain integrated security systems that include specified equipment, methods, and personnel are eligible for PSP certification. The certification focuses on three distinct areas of competence, for which applicants must master a variety of activities as well as gain the requisite knowledge and skills:

  • Physical Security Assessment: This is a basic risk management procedure in which assets must be inventoried in order to establish their monetary or organizational worth as well as their overall relevance within an asset inventory. Similarly, threats to such assets must be identified in order for preventative or palliative actions to be reviewed and implemented as needed. Physical security assessments, as well as risk analysis, are critical for recognizing organizational weaknesses and guiding the creation of effective remedies.
  • Selection of Integrated Physical Security Measures: this includes identifying the physical security measures required to mitigate possible vulnerabilities and minimize loss or damage, as well as assessing such measures to ensure they are implemented effectively and function correctly. It also entails reporting on choices, offering suggestions, and aiding in the decision process in order to guarantee that risks are handled and countermeasures are put in place.
  • Implementation of Physical Security Measures: This includes establishing criteria and procedures to ensure that acquisitions are properly bid, RFP, RFQ, and so on. It also entails establishing criteria by which bids or proposals may be assessed in terms of their overall fit to the specified requirements. Acceptance testing, as well as continuing monitoring and assessment of physical security measures, must be given to assure correct results and conformity with changing security demands and regulations.

PSP Exam

Candidates can prepare for the exam by downloading the exam handbook from the ASIS website; the handbook includes study suggestions, sample exams, and study materials. On the ASIS website, test takers may get an outline of all the individual exam subjects. There are additional reference resources, online self-study reviews, and a list of local ASIS chapters that provide study groups on the ASIS website. ASIS also hosts an annual two-day in-person refresher workshop that includes a comprehensive review of the test as well as practice tests.

The PSP exam includes 125 scored multiple-choice questions and 15 randomly distributed pre-test (unscored) questions for a total of up to 140 questions. The 2.5 hours allotted allows for a study of pre-test items.

The test includes duties, knowledge, and abilities in three broad domains regarded by PSPs as the most important aspects of physical security management.

  • ASIS members save $335.
  • $485 for nonmembers
  • The retake charge is $225.

Once passed, the certification confers ASIS board accreditation on the physical security expert. However, the task does not end there. PSP credential holders must take the necessary procedures to keep their physical security certification current. Recertification needs a three-year renewal cost, which is discounted for ASIS members.

In addition, every three years, PSP certification holders must complete at least 60 hours of continuing professional education credits. Membership in ASIS and other professional security organizations, conferences, seminars, and workshops, and online courses and classes can all provide CPE credits.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, security guards and gaming surveillance officers earned a median annual pay of $29,710, or $14.29 per hour, in May 2019. Between 2019 and 2029, job growth is expected to be roughly as rapid as the national rate, at 3%.

  • People in charge of security and response processes have certain responsibilities.
